The Alaska Medicare Clinic was founded as a response to a need; the need for Alaskans over the age of 65 to find a primary care doctor. As the cost of operating a primary care office escalated, Medicare reimbursements dropped and regulatory requirements became increasingly time consuming, most of Anchorage’s primary care providers opted out or declined to accept new Medicare eligible patients.

An interested group from the medical community came together and invested in a plan to remedy this problem. Alaska Physicians and Surgeons, Providence Health and Services Alaska, Alaska State Medical Association, and Alaska State Hospital and Nursing Home Association in coordination with Dr. George S. Rhyneer joined together and the Medicare Clinic concept was ‘born’. Supported by generous donations from these groups, the State of Alaska and many other business and private donors, the clinic became a reality.

The Alaska Medicare Clinic, Inc. was incorporated as a 501 (c) 3, non-profit organization in 2009. The clinic opened in 2011 and is welcoming new patients.
